Biographical Text

Richard Luke Marsland was born on 11 March 1895 in Rockhampton, Queensland to Luke Wagstaff Marsland and Ethel Alice Hyne. Luke was a railway clerk who worked at various stations in Brisbane, the Darling Downs and Central Queensland between 1900 and 1914.
Richard was working as a station hand when he enlisted in Brisbane on 22 December 1914. It was three months before his 20th birthday and he had to get permission from his father to enlist. Richard's service number was 872 and he spent his entire war as a Trooper. Prior to leaving Australia, Richard was one of the soldiers photographed for inclusion in the Queenslander Pictorial supplement.

On 8 April 1915 the 4th Reinforcements, 2nd Light Horse Regiment embarked on HMAT Star of England bound for Egypt. They arrived in late May and following a period of training the reinforcements were sent to Gallipoli on 1 August 1915. On 6 August Luke arrived at Gallipoli and joined his unit at Quinn's Post. This was the same day that the long-planned August offensive began with the ill-fated attack on Lone Pine. The following morning at 4:30am, Richard and his unit at Quinn's post launched their own attack as part of the broad offensive designed to break through the long-held lines at ANZAC. The unit suffered terrific losses in the first wave, with all except one man being killed or wounded. The subsequent waves were not sent and the attack stalled. On 8 August the unit was moved to garrison Pope's Post where it remained for the balance of the month.

Richard's service record suggests that he received a bullet wound to his right thumb on 14 August, but no casualties are recorded for that date in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment Unit diary. The next we hear he is admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital in Heliopolis on 25 August.

Richard spent the following seven weeks in hospital before being returned to duty with the Australian Base Details Camp. The majority of his unit was still stationed at Gallipoli and would not return until late December 1915. In January 1916 Richard re-joined the 2nd Light Horse Regiment and spent the next two months training and patrolling along the Nile at Beni Salama, north of Cairo, and Minya and Tukh el-Khel to the south.

On 1 March 1916, Richard was transferred to the Light Horse Reserve Regiment and spent the following several months in various training and reserve regiments, including a stint of 9 days with the 5th Australian Army Service Corps. Unfortunately, sources for these units are very limited and it is not possible to trace Richard further until he was the subject of a disciplinary hearing at Tel el-Kebir on 23 May 1916. From noon until 8pm Richard was charged with being absent without leave and not wearing his identity disc. He forfeited a day's pay and was confined to barracks for a week.

In August 1916 Richard was finally transferred to the Australian Base Post Office at Moascar and spent the rest of the year with the unit. On 15 December, however, Richard was again in trouble with the military authorities. He was found guilt of stealing 9 cases of beer, worth 1728 Egyptian Piastres, from a railway truck at Moascar. He was sentenced to 4 months Imprisonment with hard Labour and a stoppage of pay. This was later commuted to 3 months.

After his release, Richard returned to the 1st Light Horse Training Regiment in late March 1917. He remained in camp at Moascar until October 1917 when a medical board recommended a medical discharge due to his injured hand. On 12 December 1917 Richard embarked on the Wiltshire bound for Australia and was discharged after his return on 23 January 1918. Richard received the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service.

At some point during his time in Egypt, Richard acquired a mummified human hand, said to be that of an Egyptian Princess. He donated these remains to the Queensland Museum on 25 April 1919.

After his return to Australia, Richard married Charlotte (Dezzie) D'Joncourt Hyde on 23 November 1918 at All Saints' Church, Spring Hill. In 1919 Richard was working as a labourer and living at Lindon St in what is now Dutton Park, but later that year moved to “Barkstone” on Buckland Road at Nundah. By this time, Richard was a public servant, working as collector of public money for the Repatriation Department. The couple had least four children: Evelyn Lesley (b. 1919), Alan (m. Margaret Wells, 1946), Edward Hugh (m. Joana Mary Sullivan, 1946), and Dorothy (m. Ivan Dunning, 1952).

In the 1920s Richard and Charlotte moved to “Luana” at 90 Rode Road, Nundah, where they lived for over 40 years. Richard was a keen fisherman and secretary of the Nundah fishing club for many years, and also helped to found a Polo club in the 1920s. In the 1940s he became the supply officer of the Repatriation General Hospital at Windsor and later the secretary of the new Greenslopes Military hospital. Richard was also the secretary of the 2nd Light Horse Association in the late 1940s.

Richard died on 17 December 1966 and is buried at the Mount Thompson Memorial Gardens, Columbarium 12, Section 15.
